Breast Self Examination

Breast Self Examination  is a method by which every girl  becomes familiar with her own breasts, so that any new lump or change in shape and size of the breast is detected fast. It involves looking at your breasts in the mirror and palpating (feeling) them with your hand , once every month ( preferably after your menses).

Here’s How :

1.Start by looking for differences between your breasts.Look at yourself while either standing or sitting in front of a mirror, with your clothes removed, with your arms by your side and again, with your hands on your hips

Examine both breasts and look for:

Visible lumps ,any unusual differences between the two breasts ,dimpling or indentations in the breast tissue ,redness or scaliness to the skin or nipples that appear abnormal.Changes to your nipples, for example a nipple that is newly inverted or pulling in.

2.The feel part of the breast self-exam should be done while lying down, with a pillow propping up your head and your arm resting behind it. With the opposite hand, take the first three fingers — index, middle and ring fingers — and use them to press down around the breast and surrounding area using circular motions.

3. Examine the areas surrounding the breasts and the axillae in the same way.

Be sure to do the breast self-examination the same time every month. If you are still menstruating, do it on day 6 or 7 after your menses. Women who are postmenopausal can do the exam at any time of the month, as long it is around the same time each month.

Breast Cancer is a potentially curable disease , if detected and treated early. Self examination is one way to detect early breast cancer. So girls get going and start doing this simple procedure at home every month.
